This month we are excited to introduce one of our beloved designers and showcase a project she recently completed on an old 20th century home. Meet Beatriz of Byrdesign!
The Designer
Beatriz Rose opened Byrdesign in 2017 after a decade of designing for and collaborating with several well-respected architectural and interior design firms in Los Angeles, California.
One of her design passions is to restore (or re-envision) historic spaces in a modern and unexpectedly playful fashion while preserving the architectural integrity and character that stirs our soul. Nature and natural lighting also play a meaningful role in her work as they poetically transform spaces and elevate the human spirit. She wholeheartedly believes in understated beauty and edits her work until she strikes a happy balance between art, function and a welcoming sense of belonging.
The Project
A couple had found the home in Historic Santa Monica and fallen in love with its unique charm. The inside, however, was not as picture-perfect as the exterior. After initially opting to do the remodelling themselves, the couple realized they needed reinforcements. Our featured designer was recommended to them by a friend and they quickly hired her to help them create their dream home.
Byrdesign was tasked with reimagining the worn hardwood flooring, a broken fireplace, and a hole in the roof. She and the contractor realized that the layout of the house was outdated and not nearly as functional as it could be. The master bedroom was disproportionately large, with the only door to the backyard, and the kitchen was cramped, with no staircase to connect the upper floor to the below basement units. The couple was envisioning their dream kitchen. While the architect demolished several large closets, she turned the master bedroom into the kitchen and the former galley kitchen became a kid’s space. They reimagined one of the front bedrooms into the couple’s new master space, complete with jack-and-jill doors to fake an ensuite feel.
Our amazing designer completed the kitchen by taking the couple’s vision and expanding: a sink overlooking the garden, more storage space, and an overall more open and fresh feel.
The couple also did not want a traditional dining space, so she turned the space into an English library, complete with a rich color palette, ample storage, and comfortable seating space. The color choice was inspired by an oil painting created by the wife’s grandmother, which curated a color palette of moody green and blue hues to work with.
